Anti-Abortion Coalition Called Into Question
David Bereit, a lead organizer for Stop the Abortion Mandate, boasts that the coalition has been so effective in advocating for anti-abortion language in health care legislation that President Obama has taken notice.
"None of us expected we'd get pushback directly from the president of the United States," said Bereit, who claims Obama is directly responding to his group's efforts this week in a Webcast similar to one STAM hosted in July. And Bereit says the group hosting the Webcast, 40 Days for Health Reform, has adopted a title that riffs on the name of a STAM member organization, 40 Days for Life. But campaigners from 40 Days for Health Reform say its actions have nothing to do with the anti-abortion coalition.
Whether STAM has actually grabbed Obama's attention stands in question, as do many things about the organization's claims.
A STAM Webcast last month drew over 36,000 listeners, as well as Reps. Chris Smith, R-N.J., and Joe Pitts, R-Pa. according to organizers. And an e-mail campaign through STAM's Web site has generated 43,809 e-mails, organizers say. Those results have been bolstered by the appearance of unity between a broad range of groups that want health care legislation to include an explicit ban on abortion coverage in any government-funded or government-mandated insurance plan.
The coalition consists of some of the most powerful advocates against abortion -- including Focus on the Family, the Traditional Values Coalition, and Christian Coalition of America -- plus members as varied as Catholic lay groups, and both Libertarians for Life and Democrats for Life.
"In terms of things [STAM members] all have in common, that's a very small list," Bereit said. "But we're historic in our ability to bring this many groups together that are so divergent."
But STAM's status as a broad-based coalition may be exaggerated. STAM's efforts are largely headed by a small handful of groups, including 40 Days for Life, Susan B. Anthony List, Americans United for Life, and Students For Life of America, according to SFLA executive director Kristan Hawkins.
The most blatant fracture in STAM's claims as a broad and united front was its inclusion of a member organization that says it never signed up for the cause.
The Breast Cancer Prevention Institute was listed on STAM's online list of member organizations and in its initial letter campaign.
"I head our organization. We didn't join that. I don't know how we got on that list," said Angela Lanfranchi, a surgeon and the president of BCPI. Her organization is popular with abortion opponents because its holds that there is a medical link between abortion and breast cancer. But, Lanfranchi said, "We decidedly do not take a stand on pro-life issues."
After Lanfranchi called the STAM organizers Thursday night, BCPI was removed from the member list on the Web site. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List and a STAM organizer, chalked it up to a miscommunication.
Organizations were added to STAM's online list after agreeing to add their names to a July letter to Congress. But even among groups that did agree to sign the letter, several were surprised to learn that they had joined a coalition or that STAM has taken additional outreach steps. For example, in the weeks since the letter was organized, STAM has used online organizing to mobilize activism at town halls and has equipped its Web site with a tool enabling constituents to send their own e-mails to members.
One such group was the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, which did not realize STAM had taken any such actions -- actions the group never endorsed, according to president Karen Malec.
Even some organizations that now endorse STAM's activities had no idea about the group's efforts. John Brehany, executive director of the Catholic Medical Association, said he did not know STAM made a town hall push and used his organization's name to help do it.
"I can't say we are supporters of a town hall effort in any sense," Brehany said, before clarifying that he supports "legitimate" means of outreach and that he planned to check out STAM's Web site to see what it encourages.
Let Freedom Ring's president, Colin Hanna, said he was "not involved in" the town hall push and that he didn't "know exactly what they've done," but that he "supports the general effort." STAM urges respect and politeness in its town hall toolkit, and urges activists to "demonstrate you're not going away."
"Now that I find out that they're doing a town hall push as a piece of their effort -- I haven't read enough to support it. I'm sure it's fine," Hanna said.
It is not uncommon for coalitions to take action without seeking permission from members for every new endeavor, according to Judi Cramer, who consults with nonprofits on coalition-building. Different coalitions vary in how much member permission they seek, she said, but usually include a clear process for signing up.
Bestowing trust in a coalition comes with some risks, including having your organization's name dragged through the mud if the coalition fails or veers off course.
"In all coalitions it's a two-way street," Cramer said. "Organizations should really know what they're getting into when they're signing up for things, but the organizers should make those things very clear."
Focus on the Family spokeswoman Carrie Gordon Earll, who was equally unfamiliar with the town hall push, said that even if STAM had listed a false member organization on its list, her confidence in the group isn't shaken.
"As long as their efforts are consistent with the goal we've all agreed to, we're in good shape," Earll said. "If they start talking about, say, dog vaccinations, that's another story."
STAM seeks to assure that "any taxpayer-subsidized or government-mandated benefits package" must explicitly exclude abortion. Public dollars are currently shielded from funding abortion by measures such as the Hyde Amendment, which has since 1976 ensured public money funneled to low-income earners through Medicaid is not spent on abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or life endangerment.
Some congressional members are trying to keep the abortion debate from bringing down health care reform. In the House, the Capps Amendment, offered by Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif., was adopted by the Energy and Commerce Committee by a 30-28 vote (subscription) before the bill was approved by the committee. The amendment aimed to ensure that only private funds are spent on abortions other than in the instances allowed under the Hyde Amendment, among other protections.
This measure is insufficient for many STAM members because they say it would still allow a potential public insurance option to cover abortion. STAM itself, however, has no method for evaluating whether its advocacy points have been accomplished, and Bereit named no plans to curtail its efforts as some lawmakers propose measures aimed at meeting the demands of anti-abortion groups.

On the other hand, much has been written about the corruption of scientific research by corporate interests. Governments can also impose their agenda on scientists and cancer research centers because they provide a major source of funding for cancer research.
